Mission

The Mississippi Action For Progress (MAP), Inc. Head Start Program is designed to serve as a catalyst for change and development of a broad range of programs which meet the needs of the disadvantaged community. MAP's Head Start Program is a service program for children, as well as a mechanism for increased parental involvement with the children, and the community to effect positive change in the poverty conditions characteristic of the Head Start targeted service area. Active participation and decision-making opportunities by the parent as well as community persons are a major thrust of MAP. Guided by its philosophy and mission, MAP, Inc. has become a stellar organization providing a wide and diverse range of programs and Head Start services to more than forty seven-hundred (4700) children and their families annually in the twenty-one (21) counties in the State of Mississippi. . .

The Itta Bena Head Start Program under the auspices of Mississippi Action for Progress is a community-based child development program primarily for preschool children between the ages of 3 and 4 years old.

     The total enrollment for 2007/2008 is 128 pre-schoolers. 

     Highlighted Activities: 

     Participation in the Mississippi Valley State University homecoming parade;

     Community canvassing and nature walks; 

     Annual community Halloween event in the daytime; and

     Annual Christmas programs.

In addition, the Head Start Center administers an intake assessment and then provides family services as needed in areas such as immunization shots, dental checkups, G.E.D. training, and workforce development workshops (which include) resume writing, completing an application or interviewing techniques.
